In 1824, the lush Alhambra Valley was granted to Don Ignacio Martinez. In 1849, ferry service to Benicia became available for gold seekers and suppliers heading to Sacramento. Then in 1851, the City was designated the county seat of justice. By the turn of the century, Martinez flourished with commerce, agriculture, fishing, railroads and vineyards.

The award-winning Amtrak Station attracts commuting residents and visitors alike. While the nearby Waterfront Park, Marina and 1,100 seat outdoor amphitheater draw bustling crowds, especially on weekends. Street fairs and family events are also very popular throughout the year. Included are the New Year's Eve celebration, Fourth of July, John Muir Festival, Italian Street Painting Festival, Antique Peddlar's Faire, Car Show, and bicycle races.
